A Simple Adding and Subtracting Machine was created for teachers and parents of young children, and is currently in use in an elementary school in New Hampshire. It is offered here as a free download for your personal use.
This intuitive software uses a highly effective visual representation, similar to that of a simple slide rule, to demonstrate the process behind the workings of addition and subtraction. Children find it easy to operate the program, and teachers report that the hands-on use of two overlapping, moveable rulers has proven to be highly successful in teaching basic mathematics, even for those children who have had difficulty with these concepts in the past. Optional program settings allow rulers with or without fractional divisions, in either 6-inch or 12-inch lengths. The graphic display is scrollable to allow viewing the entire length of long rulers. Young children can start with the simplest ruler displays, and move on to fractional addition and subtraction as their skills increase.
The program is available for both Mac OS 7.1 or higher, and Windows 95/98/NT. A monitor capable of 256 colors or more is required for either platform.
